Validation of the CESD-11 Using Item Response Theory
Lee Kyeong-Won

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to verify the validity of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-11 (CESD-11) used in the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS). This study analyzed the each fitness and difficulty of 11 items through the item response theory, beyond the limitations of the classical test theory which has been mainly used in existing studies. This study was conducted on 7,048 participants who answered all of the CESD-11 from the KoWePS 14th wave (2019). The analysis results were as follows. First, all items of the CESD-11 were suitable in item fitness. Second, the person ability and the item difficulty were found to be unbalanced. Third, 4-point Likert scale was found to be appropriate for the response category of the CESD-11. Fourth, it was found that there were items that functioned differently by gender and age. Overall, it is necessary to redevelop items with difficulty that fit the characteristics of Korean adults.
